Description: Stiff white whiskers curve out from the face. They are covered with thickfur. Muscular tail. The black hairs of the animal�s coat are often tipped with white or dark red.
Range/Habitat: Dense forests of southern and southeastern Asia.
Adaptations: Strong ,heavy tail used like an extra hand to grip a branch as it moves through the trees. Keen sense of smell.
Courtship/Gestation/Birth: 1 to 4 young after a pregnancy of 3 months. Young reach full size in a year and a half.
Diet: fruit and small animals.
Remarks: Binturongs communicate with each other by scent. Each animal has a special gland under its tail that produces a strong-smelling oil. As a binturong travels, it sometimes stops and rubs it hindquarters against a branch. This makes a scent mark and lets other binturongs know it has passed by. The binturong is a kind of civet. All civets communicate with scent. Binturongs can live more than 20 years in captivity.
